Internet / Domain And Hosting Basics
back

So what is "the Internet"?  The Internet is a mega collection of millions of computers, all linked
together on a computer network. The network allows all of the computers to communicate with
one another. A home computer may be linked to the Internet using a phone-line modem, DSL
or cable modem that talks to an Internet service provider (ISP). Machines talking to machines.

To keep all of these machines straight, each machine on the Internet is assigned a unique address called an
          IP address
. IP stands for Internet protocol.  Your ISP assigns a unique IP address each time your home or
          office computer accesses the internet.

Your domain ie., www.yourbusiness.com is hosted (physically resides) at a unique IP address on the internet.
It's important to purchase and register an available domain name for your business as soon as possible.  It is also
wise to purchase similar variations of the name.

All domain names are unique and must be registered through an ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names
And Numbers) accredited registrar.  An IP address looks like this: 74.54.42.226.  This is the IP address for
          www.desertwebs.com.

Your domain name, www.yourbusiness.com, not only identifies your business on the internet but it allows people to
access your website without the need to remember the actual IP address to enter into their web browser.
Basically, when a person enters www.yourbusiness.com
into their web browser a computer on the internet called
a server supplies the numeric IP address for your website.

The browser then makes a connection to the computer (web
server) at that IP address and requests the web page and
formats and displays it on your visitors computer screen.

Once your website is developed, tested and ready for the internet, it must reside on an
internet web server.

This is called website hosting.  Simply put, you rent space and in general pay a monthly
service fee to host your website and make it available on the internet.
